How long can we leavea patient with aortic mechanical valve with out coumadin?

I think that you can not keep an mechanical valve in the aortic position without anticoagulation more than 5 days. I would begin with low molecular weight heparin after 5 days during some days looking for recurrent bleeding. Afterwards again coumadin. This attitud looks as art more than science .
